Around The World In 80 Drinks: Amangiri’s Prickly Pear Margarita
A
mangiri has been one of the 'it' hotels in the United States for the past few years — and it's easy to see why. With modern, minimalistic rooms that open up to untouched red-rock country, it's a juxtaposition that's undeniably alluring. The wild west with the luxe comfort of a hotel.
But while the backdrop and architecture get most of the credit around the web (and mainly on Instagram) what really sets this property apart is its dedication to highlighting local Navajo culture, even in the food. The restaurants — on-site or a horseback ride away — take guests on a journey through the culinary heritage of the Navajo and the American Southwest.
One of the recipes that gets the most recognition at Amangiri is the prickly pear margarita — their signature drink and a refreshing local twist on a Southwest favorite. Lucky for you, you don't have to go all that way to get a taste. With just a sip, you can transport yourself here, to the desert of Utah, where this plant grows wild.
So how do you serve this up at home? We called Amangiri Chef Anthony R. Marazita to get the recipe and tips for the home mixologist.

What does a prickly pear taste like?
The flavor profile of the prickly pear is a cross between a ripe strawberry and a tart raspberry, making this drink the perfect summer sipper.
Is the prickly pear found near the Amangiri property in Utah? If so, do you use native fruits for your drinks?
Hosh bineest’ a’, the prickly pear in Navajo, is indigenous here and used in many ways in Navajo culture — from cooking to medicine. We are lucky enough that the plant does grow wild on Amangiri’s property from late summer through early winter, allowing us to harvest it.
Should our readers use juice, puree or syrup? Is one better than the other?
For the home mixologist, I’d say just buy the syrup, as the whole fruit is a lot of work and can be quite messy.
Any other tips?
If you’re looking for a posh play on a bellini for brunch, go 50/50 orange juice to prickle pear syrup and add your favorite sparkling wine or champagne.
