Ask A Regular: Bangkok’s Creative Entrepreneur, Maan Sriluansoi
F
or the first edition of this series we're introducing you to Maan Sriluansoi, the creative director of Light Shadow Dark and mastermind of the modern souvenir shop, The Only Market Bangkok. Here, you'll find cross-cultural souvenirs that capture contemporary Thai-ness in a globalizing society. Think: t's and bags with modern yet nostalgic designs that feel cool, not kitsch.
We wanted to kick off this series with him, in Bangkok, because it's a city amidst a transformation. Last year Thai people took to the streets questioning the status quo — pushing for political change and more progressive policies. Looking inward, there are tastemakers and creatives across the city rethinking what it is to be Thai today. And when it comes to the restaurant scene, that means increasingly leaning away from imperial French and swanky Japanese and embracing local tastes.
As you’ll read, Maan’s favorite joint is unpretentious, wholesome and fun. A great spot to highlight as we kick off this series that introduces you to savvy locals who don't just have their finger on the pulse of their city, but are part of its culture and being.
So what are the rules? Our regulars must be willing to divulge their favorite restaurant, the only criteria being it must be totally delicious — not necessarily with white table cloths or a guidebook favorite. If you value taste and a unique experience over all else, we’ve made sure these insiders will never steer you wrong. So without further ado, Maan Sriluansoi. Be sure to check him out and to bookmark or Pin this for your next trip, too.

The food is locally sourced, honest and full of care.
How long have you been coming here? How often can we find you eating here?
I’ve been going to Studiyo Bar for five years — you’ll find me there almost every weekend or for any special occasion. It’s a super cool place to hang out with friends and indulge in the taste of real Thai cuisines prepared by the wonderful owner.

What are your favorite things to order?
Definitely the deep-fried pork with maggi sauce and the rice noodle spicy salad.

They do have a bar, but you have to know about it. It opens after 8 and it’s a bit hidden and private — made for like-minded people in town to gather.

No reservations needed — you can even join a stranger’s table. It’s quite small.
Favorite spot you go for a nightcap, after?
You’ll find me at SMALLS bar. It’s the only spot in town I really love.
